5 must-haves for your bag

Men! Please don’t leave. Although this post may sound like it’s just for girls, these are essentials. You might not be able to put all 5 in your back pocket, but you can fit 1 or 2 in!

Ladies, welcome!

I used to walk around with a bag that I could fit everything in but the kitchen sink. So, last year I decided to save my back and shoulder by only buying small bags. I suggest you do the same! It has made my life so much more simple and I don’t have to search in my bag for something I might not have. I know exactly what is in my bag!

To help everyone, I have come up with the 5 things you must have in your bag.

  1. Tissue.

Sometimes, I forget to put a new pack of pocket tissues in my bag. Every time that happens, I regret it so much. Especially living in Korea. For some reason, some public toilets don’t have toilet tissue. They have toilet tissue holders, but no toilet rolls. The places in that building usually provide toilet paper.
Also, you never know when you are going to sneeze…
    So, tissue!

Buy these cute Kakao friends tissues!

  2. Mints or Gum.
(If your bag is big enough, toothbrush and toothpaste)

Sometimes, you eat something smelly but you can’t go home to brush your teeth. When I moved to Korea, I noticed that all the Korean teachers would brush their teeth after eating lunch. So, I started to do it too. I regret nothing!
I guess Korean food uses more garlic and it has very strong flavours and scents, so it lingers in your mouth.

  3. Hand Sanitizer.

I feel like this one doesn’t need an explanation, but just in case…
When there is no soap around, you can still kill germs if you have hand sanitizer. If you are like me, and you hate ‘pull’ doors because you have to use your hand, this should be the first thing you put in your bag!

If you hate the smell of rubbing alcohol, buy a flavoured one!

  4. Stain remover.

Hello, my name is Dina. My favourite colour to wear is white, and I am a master at spilling food on myself.
Even if you are usually good at keeping food off your front, I would carry one round, just in case.

Here is the stain remover spray I always have in my bag!

  5. Perfume.

I know that this isn’t really small, but when you are out for the whole day and have plans in the evening, you will be so happy that you have perfume or fragrance in your bag.
If you have a Travalo, you are all set! I lost mine, so I just purchased a mini version of my favourite perfume!

If you are in Korea, buy your Travalo here!

I hope you have enjoyed this post!

10 must watch Korean movies

I come to you, extremely tired, from a PC room.
I made a promise to myself to keep blogging, so I put 10,000₩ (about £7) on my PC room membership. Although I am extremely tired, I owe it to myself (and you guys!) to keep blogging!

Please check out my list series here.

The list that I have decided to make today is, what I think are the 10 must watch Korean movies.
When I first became interested in Korean culture, it was actually movies that drew me in. Korean cinema has remained my favourite part of Korean media! So I have a lot of opinions on this category!
I will try to keep this post short, but I can’t promise! I will also try to involve all genres of film!

  1. Miracle in Cell No.7 (7번방의 선물, 2013)Drama/Comedy
    Drama/Comedy

    7번방의 선물.jpg

This movie stars my favourite actress, Park Shin-hye (박신혜), as a lawyer for her mentally ill father who was imprisoned for murder. I don’t want to give away too much of this story, so I will not give you any more plot information. However, I will say that this film made me laugh and cry like a baby. Excellent acting, a great story line and emotion filled.

  2. Memories of Murder ( 살인의 추억, 2003)
    Drama/ Mystery

    Memories of Murder poster.jpg

This is an older movie, maybe the oldest in my list. It is based on the true events of Korea’s first serial murders on record. The movie follows two detectives trying to solve the crimes. After watching this movie, I found myself looking for all information on Korea’s first serial murders. I also found myself watching other dramas and another movie (Confessions of Murder, 2012) based on the same serial murders. This is the best of the movies I watched. (Some of the dramas were great but I will make a post about that another time!)
What captured me about this movie which was actually recommended to me by a friend, is that I didn’t know any of the actors, so I could focus on their acting skills. They were great actors and I think the movie is also well directed.
If you like drama/crime/thriller/mystery movies, check this movie out!

  3. The Wailing (곡성, 2016)

    Drama/Romance

    The Wailing (film).png

This movie was also recommended to me by another friend, and to be honest, I don’t know if I am thankful!
Whenever I think about this movie I get scared. It is so disturbing. The first time I watched this movie, there were no English subtitles. At the time my Korean wasn’t the greatest, so I thought to myself, “what on earth is happening?!”…
I watched it a second time, with English subtitles. I thought to myself, “what on earth is happening?!”…
If you like horrors, this movie is for you.
If you like thrillers, this movie is for you.
If you like mysteries, this movie is for you.
If you like movies like inception and the prestige this movie is for you.
    Watch this movie.
(Plus, it stars one of my favourite actors, Hwang Jung-min (황정민)!!)

  4. Always (오직 그대만, 2011)
    Drama/Romance

    Always2011Poster.jpg

    This movie…
I don’t really like romantic movies. They make me feel so lonely and I lose hope in love! But this movie, had such a gripping story line, I had to watch it. I am very glad that I did. Although, the tissues that were used that night probably don’t feel the same.
I’ll just give you a short preview of the plot.
The extremely handsome So Ji-sub (소지섭) is an ex-boxer.
The beautiful Han Hyo-joo (한효주) is blind.
Of course, they fall in love but it’s never easy in romantic movies.

  5. Spellbound (오싹한 연애, 2011)
    Comedy/ Romance/ Horror

    오싹한 연애에 대한 이미지 검색결과

I thought that this movie was going to be a horror, but it was a comedy. It had a few jumpy scenes, but overall it is a funny movie! I also do not like comedies much, but this movie had me laughing!
If you like horror comedies, this is a great movie for you!

  6. Memoir of a Murderer (살인자의 기억법, 2017)
    Drama/Action

memoirs of a murderer에 대한 이미지 검색결과

This movie had me guessing the whole time! It has been a while since I have seen such a good thriller movie. Thriller is my favourite genre of movie. So, I have tried to watch as many thrillers as possible. This is one of the movies that I always think about when someone asks me for a recommendation.
An interesting story of a serial killer who has Alzheimer’s disease.
This movie is bound to keep you guessing about the truth.

Based on the best-selling fiction book A Murderer’s Guide to Memorization by Kim Young-ha (김영하)

  7. Poetry (시, 2010)
    Drama/ Tragedy

    Poetry film poster.jpg

I actually watched this movie when I was at home in London. I was shocked that there was a Korean movie available on Sky Movies, so I just decided to watch it.
    It was a great find.
    This movie is a tragedy.
I think one of the things that I appreciate about Korean movies is that they are very good at showing emotions and making the audience feel sympathy for the actors.
An elderly woman, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, is raising her grandson.
This movie shows what a grandma would do to protect her grandson, even if he does not deserve it.
It is a controversial topic and while I do not agree with the grandma helping the grandson, it is a movie. I tried to watch this movie while focusing on a grandmothers love as apposed to protecting people who have done something wrong.
    A greatly tragic movie.

  8. The Chaser (추격자, 2008)
    Crime/ Thriller

    The Chaser film poster.jpg

I’m not sure why, but I thought I wrote a blog on this movie. I didn’t.
A great crime thriller movie which is inspired by Korean serial killer, Yoo Young-Chul (유영철). I had heard about this serial killer before I had watched the movie, but it didn’t connect until I had watched the movie and researched it after. (I know I do things a bit backwards.)
While I was watching this movie, I found myself really hating the main character. The film has excellent acting! This movie also had me guessing what was going to happen next.
If you like watching movies or documentaries based on true crime, you may find this movie interesting.

  9. Forgotten (기억의 밤, 2017)
    Mystery/ Thriller

    Recall the Night (기억의 밤).jpg

I think you guys can tell by now, I really like thriller movies.
I watched this movie because it popped up as a suggestion on my TV. While I was watching it, I thought I knew what the story line was…
I was left shocked because it wasn’t what it seemed like.
A great watch which is action packed from the start.

I have saved my favourite movie for last, so I hope you are still with me!

  10. Hide and Seek (숨바꼭질, 2013)

    Mystery/ Thriller

    Hide and Seek (2013) poster.jpg

I have watched this films multiple times. I never get bored of it!
Every time I watch this movie, I am just so amazed at how good of an actress Moon Jeong-hee (문정희) is! She is amazing!
This movie also had me wondering what was going on the whole time! This was one of the first Korean thrillers I had watched. It is still my favourite!
I suggest everyone watches this movie and while you are watching, please pay attention!

Well, there you have it! My top 10 Korean movies.
Of course, there are many more movies that I would like to suggest to you guys! However, for today, I tried to do my favourite movies that I think have not been seen by many of my international friends and followers.

Who knows, maybe there will be a part 2!

My top 5 songs at the moment.

I love music.

I don’t think I have gone a day without putting a playlist on. If I don’t listen to music, I feel like the world will end!

My morning starts with my alarm, which is always my favourite song at that moment. Then, I cuddle Aurora, head to the bathroom and put my playlist on before I jump in the shower. I can’t explain how much I love music! Just know that, every opportunity I get, I put music on.

So I thought I would give you an insight on the kind of music I am listening to at the moment! Please bare in mind that since I am living in Korea, all of these songs are Korean songs! Sorry…not sorry… hehe

Check out my list series, here.

Here are my top 5 songs at the moment.

  • Crush – Bittersweet (크러쉬 – 잊을만하면)

I have been a huge fan of Crush every since his first single. I love his voice. I love his music. I love his videos. I love him! This song has a really relaxed feel and I think it is a great summer song! I know it isn’t as upbeat as most summer songs, but I can imagine being on a beach at night and just listening to this. (If I had a boyfriend to go with that scenario, it would be even better!)

  • Cold – Your dog loves you Feat. Crush (콜드 – Your dog loves you Feat. 크러쉬)

This song is so chill! I must admit, I haven’t really listened to the lyrics and tried to understand everything Cold and Crush are saying, (I should probably go and check out the English lyrics) but when I hear this song, I just feel so relaxed.
Update:
I just checked the lyrics and oh my gosh. I love this song even more than I did before! Cold and Crush wrote this song from their dogs perspective. And as I was reading the lyrics and listening to the song, my eyes watered so much! I almost cried in a public place! Please check the lyrics for this song!

  • DPR Live – Text me

I stumbled upon this song while I had YouTube on in the background. It just started playing and I liked the sound of it so I went to check who it was. Instantly I notice that the video is filmed in London! So, I watched it again and I liked the song more!

  • Sik-K – Get that money (식케이 – 내일 모래)

This song, I also stumbled on when I had YouTube on in the background. I really like Sik-K. Again, I think the video enticed me. It is filmed in one shot and, it really made me feel dizzy the first time I watched it! But I liked how simple the video was. So I added it to my playlist and it is now part of my morning routine!

  •  OFFONOFF – Dance (오프온오프 – 춤)

I actually think that this song might be my favourite song, after ‘Your do loves you’. This song is also filmed in England…I’m not sure if it is London but it seems like it. More importantly, it is filmed in a kebab shop! But I love the song more than the video. It is romantic and so chilled. The vibe of this song is great!

I hope that some, if not all of these songs make it to your playlist! Let me know if you like any of the songs and I might do a part 2 with 5 more songs! =)

5 reasons to move to Gimpo

Since I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from my last blog 10 things to buy when living in Korea, I have decided to stick with the lists!

When I first thought about moving to Korea, I knew that I wanted to move to Seoul. I am pretty sure that most foreigners want to live in Seoul, if they are going to make the move here. However, after spending my first 6 months in Korea, I moved to Bucheon (Which is still one of my favourite places to live in Korea). A year after living in Bucheon, I found an amazing job in Seoul so I decided to move back. I knew then, that I was over with living in Seoul.
I am now living in Gimpo and I am loving it! So I will try to convince you to explore Gyeonggi-do with, 5 reasons to move to Gimpo.

  1. New city.Gimpo

Gimpo is very big. But the part of Gimpo that I am in is brand new. This area has only been open since 2015 and I moved here in 2016. A brand new city is great because there are constantly new things being made because the city is still developing. When I first moved here, there was not that much to eat or do here. However, now there are new things popping up all the time and it is great! It keeps things interesting! Whenever a new building is made, I am so excited to see what will be opening. (I am praying for a dog café now)
  2. Apartment.Guys, my apartment is…AMAZING! I can not tell you how much I like it. When people ask me about my living situation, I am so excited to tell them. I also love having people round so I can show off!
If you are new to my blog, you might not have seen my Seoul apartment tour… my tiny apartment tour… my shoe-box tour.
If you haven’t got the hint yet. my apartment in Seoul was extremely small. If you don’t believe me, please go and check it out here.
However, my apartment now is big, spacious, new, pretty and perfect! I will just leave this picture here as evidence. (Can you see Aurora lurking?!)

  3. Quiet.
    quiet
I am such a light sleeper. I wake up when I hear Aurora drinking water in the other room. So leaving in a 24 hour city was really hard for me. Even though I was not living on a main street, I would wake up in the middle of the night to the sounds of passing cars, people walking by and phlegm spitting ajusshis .
I love that Korea never sleeps, but when I am sleeping I want the world to tiptoe. Here in Gimpo, if I close my windows, I the sound of a few passing cars won’t wake me up. Even though I live on the busiest street in my area.
I know that this might change as the underground opens and more people move here, but I am more than happy now!
  4. No foreigners. Now, this is a hit or miss. For me it is a hit. However, I will break down both and hopefully convince you that this is a good thing. Before I get into it, I want you to know that  there are places near by which have big foreigner communities.
Now let’s get into the reasons why I think it is good to live in a place where there are hardly any foreigners around.

    A. You can improve your language skills.

People around here are very good at English, but if you are serious about learning Korean, it is excellent when you’re immersed into an environment where people will probably try to speak to you in Korean and appreciate it more!

    B. You can learn more about Korean culture by making more Korean friends.

While I know that you can still make Korean friends in Seoul, a lot of people get comfortable and just make friends with foreigners, or Korean people who have been abroad and are very well cultured. So, moving out of Seoul, you are more likely to meet people who want to teach you Korean culture, as opposed to them wanting to learn more about western culture.

    C. You are easily recognised so you get a lot of free things!

Now, I am not sure if this is just a benefit I have been spoiled with, but because I’m recognised so much, owners of restaurants, boutiques, and corner shops are constantly giving me free things! Just before starting this post, I went to the corner shop to buy lemon water, and the worker gave me a lollipop! (This guy gives me something for free every time I go into the shop haha!) Who doesn’t like free things?!

  5. Separating work and play.Work-or-play-opposite-signs-396x279
When I lived in Seoul, it was very tempting to go out everyday after work. It meant that personal time and work was slowly merging together. I was meeting friends more and more often after work and it made me exhausted the next day.
Living a bit further away from Seoul, where all my friends live, means that I don’t go to Seoul when I finish work, unless it is a day where I finish early.
Rather than meeting friends everyday, I am able to spend more time with my fluff baby, or just by myself. But I am still close enough to Seoul. It just takes me 20 minutes from my house to Hapjeong, or 40 minutes to Gangnam, by bus! It is excellent!
So, I have been able to focus my weekdays on work and resting, and my weekends are free for play!

The examples that I have used for this post, is mostly revolving around Gimpo. Since I live here now, it is the best example that I can give. I know that there are many places in Gyeonggi-do which are very different to what I have mentioned. That is expected since Gyeonggi-do is so big. There is a different feeling in every city in Gyeonggi-do. I am sure there is a city for everyone to love!
My point with this post was to encourage people to think about stepping outside of the city when living in Korea! I am sure it will lead to you enjoying your time here more!
(Please remember this is an opinion piece! So please don’t get angry with me!)

If there is something that you would like to read about, please let me know! I will try my hardest to please you!
