This is the piece I spoke about in my last post ‘Woo’. It is a news piece but I was not at the scene, It is based on the demonstration that happened in Athens recently. I saw a video of what was happening in Athens and then wrote this piece in the ‘New Journalism’ style.
Burning. My eyes are burning, why? The smell of tear gas and pepper spray hits my nose and it is all made clear. Citizens around me are screaming ‘My eyes’. I look around and in the background I can make out a red figure on the floor with approximately five dark figures standing above. Kicking? It is dark as night has hit, but kicking is confirmed as I see a foot draw back and slam into the red figures torso.
As my vision clears, I recognise Police uniforms, black with white writing, with shields and bats, standing around a young man wearing a red jumper. This is all happening just foot-steps in-front of me as I am rubbing my eyes. Fireworks and rocks are being thrown at the Police Officers who captured the citizen in red. Police are now carrying the red jumper wearing citizen, just to dump him on a side street. The streets of Athens are still crowded with protesters and police.
