Lotte Giants!

Well today has been eventful! I got my visa and got a taxi to the aiport which was cheaper than on the way to the Korean embassy (3,000 JPY). I took a different route and say amazing buildings.

I got to the airport 6 hours before my flight. A bunch of Handsome Korean men sat next to me and were talking in Busan dialect. I messaged some friends mentioning that I thought they were a sports team.
After an hour I realised they had the same bags as each other. I ignored it and watched The Walking Dead so I could distract myself. When the episode ended I googled ‘Korean Giants’ because they had ‘Giants’ written on their bags.

Lotte Giants Baseball team.

=D good day! I should have fan girled  bit and gotten pictures but they were already looking at me weird cause of the fat DSLR around my neck!

An interesting day!

Finally!

Blog. I am so sorry I have neglected you for a long time. My life has been so busy and I didn’t even have much time to breathe let alone blog.

However, all is about to change as I am posting this from…. Seoul!!

I am finally back!

I managed to get a lovely job and I am going to be based in the centre of Seoul! It hasn’t been an easy road, but things seem to be picking up nicely!

I left London on the 23rd of February, landed here on the 24th. I started my orientation and met so many amazing people already. I also managed to meet up with a few of my friends. I have to make a visa run to Japan on Monday, and then I start working officially!

I just can’t wait to settle in my new apartment and start to get a routine together. I really want to explore Korea this time round. Last time I did no tourist activities. But now that I am here for at least one year, bring on the new adventures.

With new adventures come more blog posts. I have my lovely camera with me so I will be able to not only tell you guys about great things, but show you too.

=D

But now I need to go and fight off this jetlag. >.<

See you soon!

Review: The Greatest Shows on Earth (South Korea)

Well! Last night Daisy Donovan’s TV programme, The Greatest Shows on Earth, was aired on Channel 4. This week her country of choice was South Korea.

Honestly, last night was the first time I had watched Daisy’s show and I am disappointed in myself because it was really interesting! Obviously I watched it because it had something to do with Korea, but I wish I had watched all the other episodes where she travels to different countries in the world. The Greatest Show on Earth is unique and has an outstanding idea which I would have never thought of.

Daisy Donovan visited Seoul and discovered 5 different TV shows which are popular in Korea. BJ King of Cookery Biryong (Afreeca TV), 무한도전 or “Infinite Challenge”, 이제 만나러 갑니다 or “Now on My Way to Meet You” & an e-Sport show, were the shows which Daisy discovered and analysed.

What really interested me was the show 이제 만나러 갑니다 (Now on my way to meet you) and the e-sport show. 이제 만나러 갑니다 grabbed my attention because I had no idea that such a show existed. Similarly I didn’t know there were e-Sport shows either. But Now on my way to meet you is so unique and is a show which can only exist in South Korea. 이제 만나러 갑니다 has been described by Daisy Donovan as the Korean equivalent to the UK’s Loose Women. However this show has more than what meets the eye.

이제 만나러 갑니다 has a panel of North Korean defectors, known as ‘Defector Beauties’. All 15 women have escaped from North Korea and are now living in South Korea. The show has male celebrity guests who entertain and flirt with the Defector Beauties. But what gives this show a different kick is that, the defector beauties also discuss their stories and how life in North Korea was for them. As Daisy also mentioned, the show is clever because it makes you emotional as in the beginning, the defector beauties dance around and have fun. The show then takes a turn and becomes more serious. When Daisy was on the show, a male North Korean defector came on the show to share his story and with the hopes that his family which he was separated with would discover him and reunite. The show is unique to other shows in Korea and even around the world.

Although The Greatest Show on Earth was roughly and hour and a half, it was far too short! I enjoyed the programme as it covered a wide range of South Korean TV shows, but what the programme lacked was an understanding of the audience and a bit of information about funding and production. Either way, I was satisfied with the programme and I would love for there to be a continuation.

***** Five out of Five this time round!

A trip down memory lane

On the 22nd of March, new laws came into force in South Korea. One of the laws which has gained interest in the public eye is a law on indecent exposure. People wearing mini-skirts shorter than a certain length are to be fined ₩50,000 (around £30.00). There seems to be many flaws with this law.

I am far from a lawyer or anyone who has a full understanding of law in general. This is my personal view and opinion on the matter. I do not mean to cause any offence.

short skirts

It is public knowledge that South Korea and North Korea are in constant conflict, yet the fact that one of the first laws put into place during Park Geun-hye’s presidency, is the law against short skirts, is shocking.

I do understand how a ban on mini-skirts can be a positive but this is not a law that needs to be put in place before other laws which could help the country.

Aside from me not thinking that this law is necessary, the law is not even clear enough.

According to Korea Bang, the law states:

“Those who show their bare skin excessively in a public place or expose parts of the body that should remain covered, thus making others feel embarrassment or discomfort, are guilty of indecent exposure.”

There is no particular length mentioned. This means that police officers can charge people with indecent exposure when they see fit. This is not fair as there should be a standard length put in place if this law is going to be fair and work to it’s fullest potential. It seems like not much thought has been put into this law.

In the 1970’s during Park Chung-Hee’s (Park Geun-hye’s father) presidency, also had a law in place in regards to indecent exposure and skirt lengths.  During the 1970′s, there was a ban on skirts which ended higher than 20 centimetres above the knee. Mens’ hair length was also regulated.

The difference is that Park Chung-Hee made it clear what skirt length was considered as indecent exposure.

Although the Government has stated that they will publish clarification of the law and implement guidelines, I believe this law is still flawed. This is due to it’s timing and what seems to be a priority over other laws which should be implemented first.

However, as stated above, I can see positives to this law if it is looked into further.

I was shocked at the lack of length of skirts and shorts in Korea, but to me it wasn’t much of a big deal. A friend of mine said to me that she agrees with the law.

It starts with short skirts, and then it ends up being teen pregnancy and Korea turns out the same as the UK and US with crime rates increasing and a high number of teen pregnancy.

At first I thought my friend was over looking into it but then I realised it could happen. Women are seen as sexual objects in this world. Could this law be a benefit for young girls? If their Idols are wearing short skirts, teens tend to do the same in the hopes of being similar to their favourite celebrity. Therefore the banning on short skirts will mean celebrities won’t be sporting short shorts or skirts and in turn, their fans will follow them in wearing decent clothing.

exposure

Finally, when there are problems with South Korea scared of becoming under attack from North Korea launching missiles and testing underground nuclear weapon, is skirt length and indecent exposure really the first law that should be enforced in Park Geun-hye’s presidency? If so, South Korea has an interesting time a head of itself.

I hope that this changes as I want Park Geun-Hye to be a great president. As a woman, I want her to succeed and I am hopeful that she can do well in the rest of her presidency, in spite of her fathers mistakes during his presidency.
